Emily Abbott  doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s honest, unapologetic —screenshotting a rude response she got on a dating app–and really freakin’ strong.  That’s why the four-time CrossFit Games competitor (she’s made it every year since 2014) was a perfect fit for our “12 Things” Series.

Abbott, an Alberta, Calgary native is competing in the California Regional this year. Here she opens up about struggles with gymnastics, being terrified of elastic bands and an unforgettable raft trip with her family…

The hardest movement for me to learn was… Bar muscle ups as well as chest to bar. “It took me several years to understand the movement. It took hours of me recording the movement and sending it off to various coaches for tech help. HOURS! And I still haven’t mastered them.”

The song I know every word to is..House of the Rising Sun by The Animals

The last time I cried was…Yesterday. “I cry once or twice a week. I believe it’s a toxin release so I just let er’ rip.”

My last meal on death row would be… “A freshly made pasta dish from a little kitchen residing in the Tuscan region of Italy. Made with love and caring by a hearty Italian momma.”

People always are surprised by my… “Lack of competence as an adult. Hahaha.”

If I could have one superpower it would be…To be completely free of consciousness/ self-awareness. “I would love the ability to laugh, play and be purely joyful like a little girl. Or a dog. Too depressing?”

My go-to story to tell people about my family is…The weekend my dad took us four kids river rafting down the Highwood River in Canada. “He took us down on pool floaties. We had 7 to begin and one by one they began popping on the rough river bed. As we battled white water, waterfalls and rapids our legs were all cut up. With the last rapid waterfall in front of us we all squeezed into one small cheap ass Walmart dingy.

We look up and on the cliff was a cross only heightening our sheer terror. My little sister was crying and had shoved her entire fist into her mouth. We clutched each other as our dad pushed us off from the banks to our inevitable doom.

As we careened down the rapids everything went dark and chaotic. I kicked and fought my way to the next bank. Looking back I saw everyone had made it safely. It was an epic day and totally defined how I got my stokes out of life.”

My biggest pet peeve is….Feet draggers. “When you walk don’t drag you goddamn feet ya LOAF!”

I get really, really freaked out by…Elastic bands. “Don’t point one at more or I will fucking lose it.”

Favorite workout song is…Gosh by Jamie xx

The thing(s) I’d tell my younger self is.. “Seriously STOP worrying about what people think of you. Make use of the time you are alone and not a part of the group.”

The best piece of advice I ever got was...”Wake up.” – Hal the old Vietnam Vet
